Kesha struck back at body shamers this week with a sassy semi-NSFW Instagram picture and some incisive words.
“Dear @jackknife76, I see that you would very much like me to know that you think I’m ugly, and also a ‘whore.’ Well, I understand that that is your opinion, but I disagree,” she wrote. “I’m not perfect but I’m pretty fucking magical. And also, I am not, in fact, a whore. Also bullying someone who has struggled publicly with body issues is pretty mean. Thank god I’m in a place in my life where I feel empowered to address your nasty comments instead of letting them destroy me,” the “We R Who We R” singer captioned the post.
“So. On behalf of anyone anywhere who struggles with body image, STOP IT. My body is not your business. In conclusion, kiss my magical imperfect ass.”
To top off the post, Kesha included a beautiful picture of herself on the beach—mooning the camera. Because the original commenter’s account is private, it’s not immediately clear what exactly jackknife76 said, aside from calling the 29-year-old some choice names. Clearly, the singer gave him what he had coming, though.
In 2014, the songstress known for her bizarre and futuristic fashion checked into rehab for a severe eating disorder. At the time, her mother Pebe Sebert told People that she thought the now-infamous music producer Dr. Luke was to blame.
“Dr. Luke had been telling her how she had to get in shape and lose weight and all this stuff. She was exercising and dieting and ultimately doing everything she could, but not getting thin fast enough,” she said. “And that’s when she first became bulimic.”
Now, though her contentious struggles with Dr. Luke have continued, the singer is in a much more positive place about her body.
“I have been battling depression and an eating disorder for a while now,” she wrote on social media in May. “My career is in a strange place and it feels like I’m fighting an uphill fight some days.” In a profanity-laced post that got more than 73,000 “likes” on Instagram, the “TiK ToK” singer told would-be body shamers just what she thought of their rude ways—and offered an image of herself, silhouetted against a seaside sunset, with two middle fingers raised in the air.
