I am Todd, an alcoholic and more. I have been in recovery since 1987. Back then, I, like many newcomers, gnashed and recoiled from the “God stuff” in AA. Eventually, I found my answer but not before considerable froth had crossed my lips.
The Book of Tater starts with Terry, a grad student in bio-chemistry, who happens to have a lab and the “I’ll show you” attitude common to most alcoholics. He, after being challenged to do so by a crusty old timer, goes off and actually creates a higher power – or at least an entity who makes some claims in that direction. This leads to complications and a great deal of irreverence and heresy.
Tater will, over time, develop his own addictive problem, to divine retribution. He also has issues with his incarnation in the form of a potato. I am not sure this story will ever end as the various characters in the story are each, in their own ways interesting – and, in the context of recovery where interesting people abound, plausible.
It is also bizarre and demonstrates that creativity can thrive without a drunken muse.
