Peachtree City, Georgia, is as bucolic as a golfer’s paradise gets. So much so that golf cart traffic is a subject of some dispute about town—which will only intensify come January, when golf carts become street legal in the city. For local residents—children, older walkers, bike riders—sharing the town paths with drunken golf cart drivers isn’t trivial. It represents a hazard they don’t intend to put up with. “What people forget about golf cars is they’re not toys, they are vehicles under Georgia law and they’re very dangerous,” according to Peachtree City Police Lt. Mark Brown. In the past year, police have arrested 17 golf cart drivers for DUI. That will undoubtedly increase as the city ramps up patrols of the 10,000 golf carts registered in this Georgia community.
