A new animated short created for Alcoholics Anonymous is sparking conversation by highlighting the effects and often hopeless feelings that many feel while in the throes of their addiction.
Crafted by production company Buck, who were personally solicited by AA World Services, the two-minute PSA called Doors focuses on a wide range of voices detailing the abjectness of their situations. All of the narratives in the short are real-life stories from active AA members.
One of the narratives from Justin H. chronicles his journey as he admitted to “burning every single bridge, my family had cut ties from me, I was unemployable … All of those things because, you know, drinking was more important than anything else.”
But as the short progresses, the snippets of these voices inevitably start to become more positive as the characters begin to move through the doors. As this happens, the narrative begins to steer towards AA being an effective solution for overcoming alcoholism.
“We responded to the heartfelt stories of AA members and wanted to visualize the emotional and psychological journeys through illustration, animation and metaphor,” said executive producer Anne Skopas. “We tried to develop a tone that could accurately reflect how AA can impact people’s lives.”
